Selflessness

Selflessness
is having due regard and consideration for others. It is placing the well being of others ahead of personal status. Of considering effects on others of actions or events or deeds before oneself. It is helping others before atending to one's own needs. Modern life with its emphasis on material possessions encourages the belief that selfish behaviour is acceptable and those being selfless are just gullible and deserve to be taken advantage of. Being selfless requires a desire to help others, to make the effort of providing aid, of enduring short term discomfort to allow others more needy to benefit.

Seeing how those helped blossom, and feeling their renewed vigour for life is good encouragement to be selfless. Do not be selfless in order to be a martyr and seek rewards rather do it willingly because you know it is the right thing to do. Make that extra effort for the sake of another, then you will see true feelings and know you have done well. Then you can smile.
